[PowerChess] – Coronation Plaza] – bad business practice. Please do not send your kids there!!
Hello everyone, long story short – i wanted to sign up for a chess camp for my son during the upcoming holiday and came across a chess center in coronation plaza. The receptionist/owner said in order to sign up for a higher level camp, my son would need to sign up for 3 private lessons before the camp. Private lesson would cost $80 each and camp was $330 +30 regi fee. a total of $600. I paid all at once.

First lesson was supposed be 1-1 (1 hour) although there were other students here and there playing also – small issues so we can live with it. The second lesson was supposed be 1-2 (2 hours) but they didn’t have other students. There was also no dedicated teacher there so the receptionist/owner/admin was teaching my son while texting, picking up the call, greeting visitors who asked about the lessons/camp of the center constantly. It is a tiny chess center. I was not happy with the interruption of the class and feel the owner/teacher/receptionist was been very unprofessional by multitasking while teaching my son. ($80 per lesson) Hence, I asked for an explanation and how we can do better moving forward. The owner said will call me back in an hour but never did.
The next day, I requested for a refund for the 3rd lesson and camp which has not started yet. I have checked the flyer / registration form, there was no refund policy nor did it said we cannot cancel it. I have tried to call him for the last 3 days to confirm the refund but he refused to pick up my calls and read my text. I finally managed to talk to him using my hubby’s phone. He basically said there will be no refund and I can call the police or seek for legal advice if I wish. I feel it is such a bad business practice. I wonder if you guys can point me out to the right direction as how to get my money back. There is no way I will send my son to the 3rd lesson and camp after the owner scolding me over the phone and said I can call the police for this matter. He also said he doesn’t want to have anything to do with my son but insists on keeping my money. He will get another coach to coach my son but said he will call the police if i get closer to his premises and make a scene. I think he thinks too ahead – probably by playing too much chess. The owner Samuel is shameless.
Waste 400 to see how ugly a person can be. I am filing on a small claim court to get my money back! any other suggestion!? any other places I can post these to make other parents aware of this behaviors!?
