A Singapore Uncensored reader recently shared his story with us after he felt that the treatment of locals at his company was different when compared to an ang mo staff.
Here is the full story.
I am currently working in an MNC as a manager and I feel that being white has its privileges. So my general manager is an ang mo. And there are a total number of 5 other senior managers in my company. 4 of these managers are local, while the other is an ang mo.
Though he has less experience than us, his salary is 50 percent higher than the rest of the managers. Oh yes, he has a nice condo in Orchard road which is paid for by the company as well. This guy would come in late for work and leave early from work for Happy Hour and the general manager would say nothing about it. The general manager and this manager would leave for drinks at 3 or 4pm and this manager would dump his workload on all of us. And of course, he would get the credit in the end.
But if we local managers come in late, we would be shouted at by our general manager even though we were late for just 5 minutes with a valid excuse. We would end work at 8pm and that would be considered early and sometimes we would also come back on public holidays and weekends as well. Though we local managers and the ang mo manager have similar roles, but such double standards of treatment is indeed frustrating.
I’m currently thinking of leaving my job but due to the covid, I would just have to hold on.
