A 57-year-old man pleaded guilty on 16 April to one charge each of:
- Breaching a protection order
- Voluntarily causing hurt
- Harassment
- Voyeurism
Another charge of criminal intimidation was considered for sentencing.
He was jailed for 18 weeks and fined $3,000.
What happened?
The man (he cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the victim) had gotten into an argument with his wife (they have since dissolved their marriage on 11 January) on 25 February last year.
He tripped the circuit breaker at their home thrice to prevent his wife from using electricity because he feels that she doesn’t pay for anything despite living at the house.
They then got into a physical fight, where he pulled the victim’s shirt, tearing it.
He then squeezed her right breast to hurt her.
The victim then called the police at about 12.25am and was later found with minor injuries from the scuffle.
A protection order against the man was issued by the courts about a month later on 19 March, where the accused was ordered against using family violence against his wife.
On 11 April, despite being issued with a protection order, he used a spy camera to record her showering because they had not been “intimate” for about a year and he “missed her body”.
He stuck the camera onto a wall using double-sided tape and installed it in the toilet.
As the victim was showering, the camera dropped onto the ground and she found it; she then called the police and the man was subsequently arrested.
Both parties continued to live in the same home after their marriage was dissolved, and the man reportedly harassed the woman.
He returned home after midnight on 27 February and scolded the victim for being a freeloader at the unit, asking her to contribute to the bills and verbally abused her repeatedly.
He then crumpled a stack of letters, throwing them at her face before hurling a slew of vulgarities at her.
He was then arrested after she called the police and they observed that he appeared drunk and was agitated, reeking of alcohol.
