Johnson Yap, 49-years-old, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving without reasonable consideration and was sentenced on 2 July to 26 weeks jail and banned from driving for 8 years.
He was speeding at twice the road limit and crashed into a cyclist, killing him.
What happened?
Yap was driving along Tampines Avenue 3 on 21 November 2019.
He overtook a bus and sped down a few lanes, before coming to the pedestrian crossing where the 64-year-old victim was cycling and crossing the road.
Yap was driving at about 95kmh at the time and the speed limit was 50kmh.
He saw that the traffic light was green so he continued speeding, when he noticed the victim crossing.
He immediately braked but couldn’t stopped his car in time, and crashed into the victim, who was flung onto his car’s windscreen before landing on the road.
The impact was so great that the victim’s bicycle seat was ripped off and the handlebars dislodged.
The victim suffered an extensive skull fracture, a broken ankle and a deformed shin.
He later died from his injuries.
