S’PORE GIRL’S PARENTS ADOPTED A DEAD BOY (KUMANTONG)

A netizen shared how her parents adopted a Kumantong, the spirit of a dead fetus that is stored inside little statues via incantations and magick by monks and priests.

Her father was going through financial troubles and so he decided to adopt one to help him get out of his business difficulties.

He parents would treat him like a real boy, buying him toys and sweets and placing them on the alter that they created for him.

They named him Didi.

Sometimes the toys that were placed at the altar would be found in a different location by the next day even though no one had touched it.

And the sweet drinks left at the altar, such as Yakult, would become bland and tasteless by the next day.

The girl said that she didn’t pay much attention to it because she was a sceptic.

One day, she overslept her alarm and was about to become late for work.

She then felt a small tug at her feet and she mumbled “stop it”, before turning around to face the other side of the bed, continuing her sleep.

She then heard a soft voice beside her ear, saying in Mandarin:

“Jie jie, it’s time to wake up.”

She then woke up and scanned her surroundings, not seeing anyone around.

She was scared and wasn’t sure if it was her mind playing tricks on her or what.

As she left the house, she passed by the altar of the kumantong in the living room and noticed that the statue’s usual expressionless face was replaced with a wry smile.
