Yakuza is something only heard in movies but they are very much real.
It is the first time the Japanese legal system has given a death sentence to a high-level member of a Yakuza a death sentence.
A court in Fukuoko convicted 74-year-old Nomura Satoru guilty of ordering four attacks, one of which resulted in the death of the victim.
He denied any participation and made a thinly disguised threat to the court after the sentencing, stating, “I begged for a fair judgment… You will live with the consequences for the rest of your life.’
Despite the lack of clear proof that Nomura authorized violent attacks, prosecutors were successful in arguing that his total leadership of the gang meant he had ultimate culpability.
