A 69-year-old grandfather, who was the sole caregiver to a 9-year-old girl while her parents were in jail for drug related offences, reportedly molested her repeatedly.
He was sentenced on 22 June to 5 years jail for 2 counts of outraging the modesty of a minor under 14-years-old.
The offences took place between 2012 and 2013, and he would massage and touch her inappropriately while her 6 siblings were sleeping in the next room.
The crimes saw the light of day when a neighbour was investigated for sexually abusing the girl, who is now 18-years-old.
What happened?
In 2012, the victim was aching after playing soccer, and her grandfather then massaged her with baby oil and touched her inappropriately while her siblings were sleeping at night.
The “massages” would continue to other occasions, when he would molest her for about 5 to 10 minutes while her siblings slept.
On one occasion in 2013, when the victim was about 10 to 11 years old, he called her into the bedroom and told her to lie down on the bed; he then removed both their clothes and climbed on top of her while fondling her.
He stopped molesting his granddaughter after her mother was released from prison in 2014.
The victim didn’t tell anyone about his offences as he was the only one providing for the family financially and she didn’t want to cause her family hardship.
An IMH report found that the man was at risk of reoffending as he showed no remorse.
