Living in close quarters with neighbors is a common part of life, especially in Singapore’s public housing flats. While most people are understanding of occasional noises from above, the elderly couple in question had a different perspective.
An elderly couple residing in Sengkang alleged that their upstairs neighbor was causing them constant disturbance and resorted to extreme measures to express their discontent.
The incident was shared via a series of Instagram stories by Nicole Wong, who revealed the harassment that she allegedly faced.
Throwing soil
The alleged harassment began even before the upstairs neighbor, Nicole, moved into her Sengkang unit.
While renovation works were underway, an elderly woman from the unit below reportedly threw soil at Nicole’s front door, expressing her frustration with the construction noise. This initial incident set the stage for future conflicts.
Banging ceiling
Nicole recounted that, despite her efforts to keep noise levels down, the elderly couple started banging on their ceiling frequently.
These incidents occurred even when Nicole’s family was not making any noise at all. The couple’s grievances seemed to extend beyond specific instances of noise disturbance, hinting at deeper issues.
Accusations and Counter-Accusations
The elderly woman occasionally shouted from her unit, accusing Nicole’s family of disturbing her, even when the noises were as mundane as shower sounds.
When confronted, the couple would allegedly claim that the residents were ganging up against them.
Loud Thumping at Odd Hours
The situation escalated when Nicole was awakened at 4 am by loud thumping sounds. Frustrated and upset, she called the police. Strangely, the noise stopped as soon as the police were involved.
However, the incidents continued, prompting Nicole to seek further assistance.
The Alleged Medicinal Odor
During one incident, the elderly couple alleged that they smelled a medicinal odor. While this claim seemed unrelated to the noise issue, it added to the confusion and tension between the neighbors.
Escalation and Police Intervention
Nicole called the police on multiple occasions when confronted by the elderly couple. The situation reached a point where the police were frequently involved in resolving conflicts between the neighbors. The ongoing disturbances caused distress to all parties involved.
The swordswoman of Sengkang
A video shared by Nicole captured a heated confrontation between the elderly woman and the previous owner of Nicole’s flat.
During this confrontation, the elderly woman brandished a large chopper and made violent gestures with it. The confrontation escalated to the point where she allegedly threatened to hurt herself, necessitating the intervention of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), who set up inflatable air cushions under the block as a precaution.
– Seeking Help for the Elderly Couple
Despite facing harassment, Nicole expressed reluctance to take legal action against the elderly couple. Instead, she sought help to identify their sons to ensure they received appropriate mental health assessments.
She reached out to her Member of Parliament (MP) Jamus Lim for assistance, who purportedly told the elderly couple’s son to get help for his parents but the son alleged refused.
