Amid fears of Artificial intelligence (AI) taking over people’s jobs, it appears there’s no need to worry after all, or is there?

A video emerged online showing a robot barista at Punggol Hawker Centre brewing a pot of coffee, and everything went horribly wrong.

Facebook user Ks Toh posted a video of the amusing incident on the Facebook group Hawkers United, showing the robot toppling over the coffee pot and pouring the coffee onto the floor instead.

Toh said in the Facebook post: “This is the reason why robot baristas cannot replace human beings – just happened today at the One Punggol Hawker Centre.”

“P.S. Too many people criticise the robot. Obviously the cause of this failure needs to be examined but to clarify, I support the use of robots. I use robots at home.”

In the video, the robot was seen putting down the coffee pot on the counter, but it didn’t set it down properly and it fell onto the side.

The robot then picked up another jug of coffee to pour it into the pot but completely misses it, pouring the coffee ontot he floor instead.

The onlooking customers watched on in disbelief as they exclaimed in horror “aiyo… oh… my goodness… aiyooooo…”

The staff members who were working at the counter behind the robot, then watched on in horror themselves as one of them came forward to film the whole thing.

The worker then proceeded to arrange the toppled coffee pot, but the damage had already been done.

Netizens’ comments

  1. This is the problem when they simply pump in the cheapest with just basic cheap programming without AI or even a kettle present sensor. But at least much better than those tray return Centre in major new Hawker Centre.
Just use a state machine….why…just why would anyone try interfacing a robot arm with ……kopi pots…
This is a bad application of engineering…
  2. Everything also wants to catch up with future but it’s obviously shows that in local singapore can’t make it. Haiz…
  3. Success doesnt come without failures and constant improvement. This is a good start.
