Air India Plane Crash: Compensation for Victims’ Families Confirmed

Air India has announced the compensation amount for the families of the victims involved in the tragic plane crash that occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport. The airline’s AI 171 flight, which was en route to London Gatwick, crashed into a residential area known as Meghani Nagar, specifically impacting a medical college hostel.

The flight, carrying a total of 242 individuals, included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals. Following the crash, Commissioner G.S. Malik of the Ahmedabad city police reported that it “appears there are no survivors,” although one survivor has since been confirmed.

Compensation Announcement

In a statement released by Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of the Tata Group (which owns Air India), the airline expressed deep sorrow over the incident. The statement read:

“We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured.”

The Tata Group has committed to providing ₹1 crore (approximately $116,000) to the families of each deceased passenger. Additionally, the airline will cover medical expenses for the injured and support the rebuilding of the B J Medical’s hostel affected by the crash.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter, stating, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.” He assured that ministers and authorities are working to assist those impacted by the incident.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also commented on the devastating news, noting the distressing situation for the families of British nationals involved. He stated, “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating.”
