Passengers travelling on a regional flight were left startled after a section of the cabin interior became dislodged upon landing, raising fresh concerns about aircraft maintenance and passenger safety.
The incident occurred on flight AK720 operated by AirAsia, which departed from Singapore and landed in Kuala Lumpur at approximately 10:22pm. According to reports, the aircraft had completed its descent normally before an unexpected issue unfolded inside the cabin.
Shortly after touchdown, a portion of the overhead panel loosened and partially detached, leaving it hanging by exposed wiring and resting against nearby seats. Debris from the panel was also said to have fallen onto unoccupied seats, narrowly avoiding any injuries.
Sudden Noise Followed By Shock Inside Cabin
One passenger, identified only by his surname Chen, described hearing an unusual sound moments after the aircraft landed. Initially, the noise did not raise alarm, as vibrations during landing are generally expected.
However, upon looking ahead, he noticed that a sizeable section of the overhead compartment had come loose. While the landing itself was described as routine, the unexpected detachment of cabin fittings created a moment of confusion among those on board.
Fortunately, the affected seats were empty at the time. This significantly reduced the risk of injury, as falling components could have caused harm if passengers had been seated directly beneath the panel.
Despite the situation, the aircraft continued taxiing as normal before passengers disembarked safely.

The unusual nature of the incident prompted a range of reactions. While some passengers were visibly shaken, others responded with disbelief, with a few even laughing at the situation.
