I’m a flight attendant. I’ve been working for my airline for seven years now and I’ve seen a lot of things in that time. I’ve seen happy passengers, sad passengers, and everything in between. I’ve also seen a lot of different dietary requirements. It’s my job to make sure all passengers are taken care of, no matter what their needs may be.
Dog food for vegans
That’s why I’m so frustrated when it comes to vegan passengers. I understand that some passengers are vegan for moral reasons, but it’s still my job to provide them with a meal. Unfortunately, my airline doesn’t have a wide variety of vegan options and what we do have is often sub-par. We refer to it as “dog food” because it literally comes out of a can.
We pour it onto a plate and it’s slimy.
The worse part is, they did not inform the airline that they are vegan until they boarded the plane, what genius.
It’s not just vegan passengers who get stuck with this dog food either. Vegetarians, flexitarians, and anyone who demands a plant-based meal also get served the same meal. The food is often bland and unappetizing, and it’s rarely enough to fill anyone up. It’s also loaded with preservatives and other unhealthy ingredients.
It’s not just the food that bothers me either. It’s the way we serve it that’s often worse. We don’t give vegan passengers any utensils or napkins, and we don’t offer them any other options. We simply hand them their “dog food” and tell them that’s all we have.
I understand that it’s not always easy to accommodate vegan passengers, and I’m not saying that my airline should be expected to cater to everyone’s needs. But I do think they can do better. A little bit of effort would go a long way and make a huge difference to vegan passengers.
So, if you’re a vegan passenger, remember that you deserve better than “dog food”, always request Vegan food when your booking the flight. Not until the plane takes off.
