A man working in a Singapore office recently got the shock of his life when he witnessed a young female colleague — believed to be a local — confidently whack a plastic disposable cup straight into the office microwave.

Yes, you read that right. The whole cup. Plastic. Into microwave.

Malaysian Colleague: “Eh, cannot lah! Plastic will melt leh!”

According to the eyewitness (who until now still cannot forget the burnt smell), one Malaysian colleague actually tried to warn her nicely.

“Eh, this kind of plastic cannot put in microwave one leh. Later melt and toxic how?”

But the Singapore girl just waved her off and said, “Aiya, can one lah. I do it at home all the time. Just 30 seconds only what.”

Famous last words. 😬

Office Now Smells Like Burnt Hawker Tray

Barely 10 seconds in, the entire pantry started to smell like melted rubbish chute.

People from two desks away started asking, “Eh, who cooking plastic sia?”
One intern thought someone left a charger burning.

Turns out, the cup had started to melt halfway, and the drink inside began to bubble over, mixing with plastic like some horror science experiment.

Thankfully, no fire broke out — but the microwave kena stained, and the office had to air the pantry for the rest of the afternoon.

“Not Sure Is Science Fail Or Common Sense Fail”

After the incident, some colleagues whispered, “Wah, how she survive at home sia?”
Another joked, “Now we know why GrabFood doing so well.”

One even asked if she also puts metal spoon in microwave. 😳

Of course, we all make mistakes lah. But this one really classic example of confidence without knowledge.

Moral of the Story? Don’t Play Play with Plastic + Microwave

In case you blur like sotong — not all plastic is microwave-safe. If the cup not labelled with the microwave-safe symbol (usually a wavy line), don’t anyhow try.

Melted plastic can release toxic chemicals into your food and stink up your whole pantry.

If you’re not sure? Use a mug lah. Or better still, ask someone. Don’t later your whole office kena ‘air freshener’ treatment again.

👩‍🍳 Modern S’pore girls don’t need to cook gourmet meals lah… but at least know plastic cannot microwave, can?
