According to Straits Times (ST), The 27-year-old is scheduled to appear before the State Courts on March 20, marking the start of legal proceedings under the Enlistment Act. His return follows months in U.S. immigration detention, after authorities there moved to remove him from the country.

The case has reignited public attention, given Yee’s long and controversial history both in Singapore and overseas.

Deported After Time In U.S. Custody

Yee’s deportation was confirmed after he spent several months detained by U.S. immigration authorities. He had been transferred across multiple detention facilities before being formally removed from the country on March 19.

Upon arrival in Singapore, he is expected to face charges related to failing to fulfil his NS obligations. According to the Ministry of Defence Singapore, he had earlier failed to report for pre-enlistment medical screening and remained overseas without a valid exit permit.

Under Singapore law, such offences carry penalties of up to S$10,000 in fines, imprisonment of up to three years, or both. His court mention signals the beginning of formal proceedings for these alleged violations.

From Online Controversy To Criminal Convictions

Yee first rose to prominence in 2015 after publishing videos that led to charges for deliberately wounding religious feelings. He was subsequently jailed, and in 2016 faced further legal consequences for additional offensive content targeting religious groups.

Later that year, he left Singapore for the United States and sought asylum, claiming political persecution. Despite objections raised during proceedings, he was granted asylum in 2018.

However, his situation took a serious turn in 2020 when he was arrested in Chicago on charges related to child exploitation. Court documents revealed that he had communicated with a minor and solicited explicit material despite knowing her age.

Legal Troubles Continue Across Borders

In December 2021, Yee was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment in the U.S. for offences involving child pornography. Although he was released on parole in October 2023, he was re-arrested shortly after for breaching strict conditions imposed upon him.

These conditions included restrictions on internet usage and limitations on being near places frequented by children. His violation of these terms resulted in further detention before his eventual release again in late 2025.

Following that, U.S. immigration authorities detained him once more, placing him among high-risk offenders pending deportation. His removal from the country ultimately paved the way for Singapore authorities to proceed with charges linked to his earlier NS offences.

Yee’s return highlights how legal consequences can follow individuals across jurisdictions, particularly in cases involving both criminal convictions and national obligations. His upcoming court proceedings are expected to draw close attention, given the seriousness of the charges and his high-profile background.
