Here is her statement

Improving safety for workers’ transportation has been something we have been looking to improve in the past year.

We have made some progress and the dedicated committee members from the various agencies have come up with three initiatives:

Traffic Police will require all lorries to be installed with some form of speed management device.

Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will introduce new measures to require employers to provide sufficient rest for their drivers, in particular those who play dual roles of a driver and ground worker.

MOM will also mandate that every lorry ferrying workers have a designated vehicle person-in-charge who will sit next to the driver. This person-in-charge will be empowered to stop the driver from driving if he deems the driver to be unfit for driving.

Land Transport Authority – We Keep Your World Moving, with the support of MOM, have decided to mandate the installation of rain covers on all lorries used to ferry workers.

While some have asked for the back of lorries to be fitted with seat belts, the experts have advised that this might cause more harm to the user and lead to a different type of safety risk, and even. There are also insurance and liability issues for such modifications without the support of the lorry manufacturers.

Nevertheless, we will continue to study other ways that can improve the safety of workers’ transportation #MOTCOS2022#SGBudget2022
