47-year-old American National, Jason Scott Herrin, who is working at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was today (25 Jan) charged in court for a few offences involving children.
Four charges were presented to him and they are:
- Possessing child material
- Possessing obscene videos
- Communicating with another person to obtain services of a minor under 18.
His alleged doings
On 17 August 2020, Herrin was alleged to have over 90 ‘child’ photographs at a condominium in Bukit Panjang known as Eco Sanctuary.
He was also alleged to have 31 obscene footage.
On 14 November 2019 while in Singapore, he was alleged to have communicated with an Indonesian number asking the person to offer about four million rupiah to 12-year-old girls for the purpose of boom boom.
Four million rupiah equates to roughly S$375.
On 18 February 2020, he was alleged to have communicated with a Laos number instructing the person to find a child for him for boom boom at a ‘high price’.
Court proceedings
A bail of S$20,000 was set by the judge and his case was adjourned until 22 February 2022.
Worked at NTU
Herrin was employed by NTU as a researcher of volcanoes as well as the study of meteorites and asteroid impacts on Earth, according to his profile page on NTU’s Earth Observatory of Singapore.
He has since been suspended and barred from entering the campus.
Penalties
If Herrin is found guilty of possessing ‘child’ material, his jail term can be up to five years with either a fine or caning.
If found guilty of communicating with another person to obtain ‘services’ from children under 18, his jail term can be up to two years and/or fined.
If found guilty of possessing obscene films, his fine can be up to S$1,000 for each film and/or jailed for up to 12 months.
