An anonymous post complaining about a bus full of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel has drawn widespread criticism online, with many netizens defending National Servicemen’s right to use public transport.
The post, shared in a local Facebook community, showed a packed SMRT bus service 192 filled with soldiers in green uniforms during the morning commute.
The anonymous poster claimed the accompanying photo “didn’t do it justice”, describing it as a “whole sea of green” and alleging that the large number of servicemen slowed boarding and alighting.
The poster also questioned why the SAF could not “do something to discourage this kind of disruptive behaviour”, arguing that Jurong Camp was nearby.
Bus service 192 passes bus stops serving Jurong Camp and the surrounding military facilities, making it a commonly used route for servicemen travelling to and from camp.
Netizens Rush To Defend NSFs
The complaint quickly attracted hundreds of comments, with the overwhelming majority disagreeing with the anonymous poster.
Many pointed out that National Servicemen pay the same fares as other commuters and are entitled to use public buses.
Several commenters questioned what was “disruptive” about soldiers boarding and alighting together, while others likened the situation to schoolchildren crowding buses near schools during dismissal times.
Some suggested that commuters unhappy with crowded buses should consider taking taxis or private-hire vehicles instead.
Others praised the servicemen for fulfilling their National Service obligations, saying they deserved appreciation rather than criticism.
A number of commenters also criticised the use of an anonymous account, saying the poster should have attached their real identity if they wished to air such views.
Crowded Public Transport Remains A Common Issue
Crowding on buses and trains continues to be one of the most common concerns among Singapore commuters, according to recent findings released by the Public Transport Council. The survey identified bus crowding, waiting times and commuter behaviour as among the top issues affecting passenger satisfaction.
As of publication, there has been no indication that the SAF or transport authorities intend to introduce dedicated transport arrangements for personnel using the route.
