In a surprising revelation, an illegal gambling den has been reported in a narrow alley in Jurong West, Singapore, where stakes have reportedly reached as high as S$50,000. The clandestine operation is said to take place between a wet market and a coffee shop along Jurong West Street 41, specifically between Block 493 and Block 494.

According to an anonymous source who spoke to Shin Min Daily News, a group of elderly men has been gathering in this alley to gamble with dice at a makeshift stall, often in broad daylight. The source indicated that these gatherings typically occur on weekend mornings, although they have also been known to take place on weekdays. The gambling sessions reportedly begin as early as 6 AM, with no fixed closing time.

Dispersal Tactics and Observations

Witnesses have noted that the group quickly disperses when they spot uniformed officers nearby, only to reconvene shortly after the coast is clear. On May 27, around 10 AM, approximately ten men were observed gathered around a table next to a shrine in the alley, equipped with dice, cups, plates, and chess pieces. Some participants were seen placing S$50 bills on the table, indicating their bets.

The source also mentioned that additional individuals were stationed as lookouts at the nearby coffee shop and a drop-off point close to the alley. By 11 AM, the group had dispersed, leaving the gambling table behind.

Legal Implications

Under Singapore’s gambling laws, it is illegal to gamble with an unlicensed service provider or at an unlawful gambling venue. Offenders can face severe penalties, including fines of up to S$10,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.

Local businesses and residents have expressed awareness of the gatherings but were uncertain about the activities taking place. The presence of such an illegal gambling operation raises concerns about public safety and the enforcement of gambling regulations in the area.

As authorities continue to monitor the situation, this incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating illegal gambling activities in urban settings. The community’s vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement will be crucial in addressing these issues effectively.
