[10 arrested and 295 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes seized]
Singapore Customs arrested five Bangladeshi and five Indonesian men, aged between 23 and 47, and seized 295 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a company on Jurong Island on 27 Jan 2021.

Singapore Customs responded to a call from the security officers of the company, who had detained three workers found with the duty-unpaid cigarettes. Our officers arrested the three workers and two other workers, and five crew members of a vessel berthed at the company’s jetty. Investigations revealed that the five crew members had purchased the duty-unpaid cigarettes from overseas and resold them to two of the workers. The three workers detained earlier were engaged to collect the cigarettes from the vessel.
All 10 men were charged in court for dealing with duty-unpaid cigarettes on 28 Jan 2021. The duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) evaded amounted to about $40,300 and $3,040 respectively.
