BEING A PEDESTRIAN IS AN EXTREME SPORT NOWADAYS BECAUSE OF SPEEDING CYCLISTS

Can pedestrians feel safe anymore?

Advertisements

Saw a mother of 2 pushing a stroller along a narrow covered walkway, was startled when a speeding cyclist overtook just inches away. Heard her saying ‘On the road, have to give way, on pathway also have to give way.’

Being a pedestrian, especially with kids in tow, now seems like an extreme sport nowadays. Even PMDs are going fast on the pathway.

Can we feel safe walking anymore?

  1. At least she’s pushing a stroller (assuming kid is strapped in). At the toddler-little kid stage, even if they’re holding hands, kids can be unpredictable and dash away from the parent suddenly. I’ve seen and experienced enough close shaves with PMDs on footpaths to help me determine that driving is the right way to a peace of mind, instead of having to be in a constant state of vigilance. Hats off to parents who have no choice and have to suffer silently. It got a lot worse post-2010.
I’ve also seen nuisance PMDs deliberately scaring old people on the footpath. Really horrible and dangerous behaviour.
  2. Lol I have a habit of looking over my shoulder whenever I am walking on a pavement. Can be such a pain at times so I am trying to get rid of it.
Back to the main point, I think it’s safer if the cyclists rang their bells. At least give us a signal since you are in my blind spot. Some of them speed past me like they are in a race or something. If touch wood they hit me or something I will definitely pursue the matter.
  3. Omg finally a post like this – fking cyclists ride under the HDB blocks now even!! I’m not even 30 but I worry for old people/young kids around. They whizz by so near u and I had one curse/swear at us when we didn’t want to give way. Fk off the pedestrian walkways jeez
  4. I often end up walking on the grass and the road, or have to just stop in my tracks cause sometimes idk what they want me to do man. They cycle so fast and give no signals, and when both directions also have cyclists who don’t want to give way to each other…
Bus stops are really bad too. My bus is coming and I move to queue for the bus, they zoom past me and glare at me. They never want to stop or use the directed path around the bus stop.
I also don’t think our bike lanes are effective. Places in Europe have bike lanes at the same level as roads while walking paths are higher. I feel like this makes more sense but that’s just me 🤷🏼‍♀️
  5. Y’all complaining about the user when the problem is the path we are using, better to segregate everyone to their own path, not mixing of bicycles, pedestrians and cars.
