BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION EXPLODES, GAS LEAKED CANDLES LIT

A birthday celebration turned into a fatal tragedy in the United States after a campervan explosion killed two long-time friends. The accident happened at Old Orchard Beach, a popular seaside town in Maine, and has prompted fresh warnings on gas safety in recreational vehicles.

According to investigations by local fire and police officials, 58-year-old Alesia Ventura-Large and 57-year-old Nancy Pilsch had arrived at the campsite on 16 August to celebrate Alesia’s birthday. When entering the campervan, they noticed a strong odour, described as similar to garlic, which investigators believe was leaking gas. The women tried to air out the van by opening the windows before lighting candles. That small spark triggered a massive explosion.

Both women suffered critical injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical centre but could not be saved. The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said initial findings suggest the blast was likely caused by a propane system fault or an improperly closed gas stove. However, a specialist team will carry out further checks to confirm the precise cause.

Gas safety concerns in campervans

Maine’s fire chief, Shawn Esler, stressed the importance of installing gas detectors in addition to smoke alarms, which were the only safety devices found in the destroyed campervan. “If there’s a gas leak, a detector will sound the alarm before disaster strikes,” he warned.

Veteran camper James Viet, interviewed by local media, also highlighted that many travellers underestimate the risks of propane or natural gas systems in caravans. He urged recreational vehicle owners to treat gas detectors as essential equipment, just like fire extinguishers.

A community in mourning

The sudden deaths have left both families and the local community shaken. Alesia’s grieving husband described her as “an extraordinary woman and a light in many people’s lives.” The campsite management issued a statement expressing condolences, saying their “thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families.”

The incident has quickly gained international attention, not only for its shocking nature but also as a reminder of how everyday activities—such as lighting a candle—can become deadly when combined with unseen hazards like gas leaks.

Authorities are now urging RV and campervan users worldwide to ensure their vehicles are fitted with working gas detectors, to regularly service propane systems, and to treat unusual odours seriously before using any open flames. This heartbreaking case is a stark lesson in the importance of safety precautions when travelling or camping.
