In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded at a pedestrian crossing in Punggol that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old schoolboy; a 25-year-old man, Firhan Aqil Mohamad Amran, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and banned from driving for 10 years, according to Channel NewsAsia.

The tragic collision occurred when Firhan ran a red light, colliding with a teenager who was crossing the road, resulting in the young victim’s untimely death.

Firhan Aqil Mohamad Amran pleaded guilty to a single charge of dangerous driving causing death. The severity of the charge reflects the tragic outcome of his reckless actions on that fateful day.

The Tragic Incident

On October 10, 2022, the 14-year-old victim was on his way home from school during the examination period, allowing for an early dismissal. At a pedestrian crossing along Sumang Walk towards Sumang Link, he waited for the traffic light signal to turn green.

As the traffic light signal for pedestrians shifted to a green man, indicating the safe passage for pedestrians, the young boy began to cross the road. Simultaneously, the signal for vehicles turned red, requiring them to stop.

Firhan, driving towards his father’s home, failed to obey the red light and collided with the teenager, flinging him a considerable distance. Despite the impact, Firhan brought his car to a halt.

A witness at the scene rushed to check on the injured boy, finding him bleeding from his ears and unresponsive. The severity of the injuries prompted immediate action, and the victim was transported to Sengkang General Hospital in an unconscious state.

Despite medical efforts, the teenager succumbed to his injuries and tragically passed away on November 2, 2022. Subsequently, legal proceedings were initiated against Firhan, culminating in his guilty plea and the subsequent court sentence.

VIII. Legal Consequences

Firhan’s sentencing to two years’ imprisonment and a 10-year driving ban emphasizes the gravity of dangerous driving causing death. The legal repercussions are intended not only to serve justice for the victim but also to act as a deterrent against reckless driving, particularly at pedestrian crossings.
