Shocking discovery of woman’s body weighted down with dumbbells near pier prompts urgent police investigation
A grim murder investigation has been launched in Phang Nga after the body of an unidentified woman was found chained to two concrete dumbbells near Ban Tha Yai pier in Mueang district on August 8.
Victim Found Weighted and Concealed Underwater
Police Lieutenant Pheerawit Chaichanyut of Khok Kloi Police Station responded to a call from alarmed locals alongside Kusoltham Foundation rescue workers. The victim, clad in grey shorts and a brown T-shirt, had been deceased for approximately two days when discovered in the murky waters close to shore.
A heavy chain was tightly wrapped around her neck and secured to the dumbbells, a clear attempt to weigh the body down and conceal it underwater. Despite this, the corpse drifted near the shoreline where it was found.
Police Treat Case as Possible Murder; Investigations Underway
The body has been sent for a full autopsy to establish the cause of death and determine if the victim was alive when placed in the water. Authorities have not ruled out foul play, noting the weighted restraints strongly suggest a homicide.
Local community leaders and neighbouring districts have been alerted to check for any missing persons matching the description. Meanwhile, investigators are reviewing CCTV footage around the pier and surrounding waterways to trace any suspicious activity in the days before the discovery.
“This is a serious case, and we are treating it as a possible murder,” said Pol. Lt. Pheerawit. “The way the body was weighted down points towards an attempt to conceal it.”
Similar Cases Highlight Growing Concerns Over Violent Crimes in the Region
This incident recalls a comparable February case in Ban Chang, Rayong, where a decomposed woman’s body was found inside a locked suitcase weighted with dumbbells. The victim’s identity remains unknown.
Authorities urge anyone with information about this case or unusual activity near Ban Tha Yai pier to come forward immediately.
