Body Of Elderly Man Found In Whampoa Flat After Neighbours Notice Foul Smell And Strange Brown Liquid

Residents at a Whampoa HDB block were left shocked after the body of a 72-year-old man was discovered inside his flat following days of complaints about a strong foul odour and mysterious brown droplets leaking through the ceiling.

The incident happened at Block 76 Lorong Limau, where neighbours initially believed the unpleasant smell was coming from a nearby garbage truck or a plumbing issue. However, the stench reportedly continued for several days, causing growing concern among residents in the estate, reported Shin Min Daily News.

One resident told local Chinese media that she originally ignored the smell because rubbish trucks frequently passed through the area. But after three days, the odour became unbearable and started spreading throughout the corridor and nearby units.

Another resident living directly below the deceased man’s flat reportedly noticed brown liquid dripping from her ceiling. She initially thought a pipe had burst and contacted HDB for assistance.

According to the neighbour, the droplets carried a strange and unpleasant smell, and the liquid continued leaking onto the floor for an extended period. HDB officers reportedly checked the plumbing system but did not find any defects or water leakage issues within the unit.

Residents Eventually Alert Police After Situation Worsens

As the smell intensified, a group of concerned residents decided to alert the police. Officers later arrived at the unit and discovered the elderly man lying motionless inside the flat.

The Singapore Police Force confirmed that they received a report regarding a non-natural death on May 16. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations have ruled out foul play or homicide. Authorities are currently continuing investigations into the case.

Neighbours described the deceased as a quiet and reserved individual who rarely interacted with residents around him. Since the passing of his mother during the Covid-19 pandemic, he reportedly lived alone and seldom received visitors.

Residents shared that it was common not to see him for several days at a time, so nobody initially became alarmed when he disappeared from sight.

One neighbour recalled that the elderly man used to water his plants every morning and generally kept to himself.

Incident Sparks Discussion About Elderly Isolation In Singapore

The incident has once again raised concerns about elderly individuals living alone in Singapore’s ageing HDB estates. Many Singaporeans online expressed sadness over how isolated some seniors have become, especially those without close family members nearby.

Social service groups have repeatedly highlighted the importance of regular welfare checks and stronger community support systems for elderly residents living alone. Financial planning, health insurance, and retirement support have also become increasingly important topics as Singapore’s ageing population continues to grow.

Several residents in the area reportedly felt disturbed by the discovery, especially after learning that the strange liquid leaking from the ceiling was believed to be bodily fluids from the decomposing corpse.

The shocking case has since gone viral across Singapore social media platforms, with many netizens urging neighbours to check in more frequently on elderly residents living alone in HDB flats.
