A young boy was involved in a traffic collision at a busy junction along Yio Chu Kang Road after attempting to cross the street while the pedestrian light was still red. The incident, which was caught on dashcam footage and later shared online, has sparked renewed concern about pedestrian safety and traffic awareness in Singapore.
Incident Captured on Video
The video footage, uploaded to the Singapore Road Vigilante Facebook page, showed the boy making a sudden dash across the road at the intersection of Yio Chu Kang Road and Hougang Avenue 8. The pedestrian crossing signal had not yet turned green, and oncoming vehicles had the right of way.
As the boy ran across the road, he collided directly with a moving ComfortDelGro taxi. The impact knocked him to the ground. The taxi came to a stop a few metres beyond the crossing while the boy, appearing shaken but conscious, picked himself up, retrieved his belongings, and continued crossing the road.
Police Confirm Investigation Underway
In response to media queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that a report was lodged and that investigations are currently ongoing. Authorities have not released details about the boy’s age or whether any injuries were sustained. However, based on the video, he appeared to walk away from the scene without needing immediate medical attention.
The incident raises questions about parental supervision, road safety education for children, and whether additional safety measures are required at high-risk intersections across the island.
Safety Concerns and Legal Implications
Traffic safety experts have long stressed the dangers of jaywalking and crossing against the light. In Singapore, pedestrians who flout traffic rules can face fines under the Road Traffic Act, especially in cases where accidents or injuries occur.
Had the collision resulted in more severe injury, the case could have involved personal injury claims or even civil liability against the parties involved. While the taxi driver appeared to have the right of way, the outcome of the investigation will determine whether any further action is required.
Experts are also urging drivers to remain vigilant, especially near schools and pedestrian-heavy zones, as children may not always exercise proper judgment when crossing roads. Similarly, guardians and educators are reminded of the importance of teaching children to obey traffic signals and observe their surroundings.
