Bukit Merah HDB Fire Leaves Two Dead, Dozens Evacuated

A devastating blaze at Block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah on Tuesday afternoon has claimed the lives of a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, with two others hospitalised and about 60 residents evacuated as a safety precaution.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the fire at around 4pm. When firefighters arrived, both the living room and bedroom of a fourth-floor Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat were ablaze. The flames were brought under control with a water jet, but thick black smoke had already poured from the windows, visible from nearby roads.

Videos circulating on social media showed firefighters using ladders to reach the unit while police officers assisted in managing crowds and coordinating the evacuation. Inside the flat, SCDF located two unconscious occupants in the kitchen. They were immediately carried out and rushed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where they later passed away.

Two Others Hospitalised, Residents in Shock

SCDF confirmed that two other residents from neighbouring units were also conveyed to hospital — one for smoke inhalation and another who felt unwell during the evacuation.

About 60 people were safely escorted out of the block as a precautionary measure. Many residents stood outside watching in disbelief, with some describing the fire as “intense and frightening”. The incident has sparked fresh concern over fire safety in high-rise buildings, particularly in densely populated estates.

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Police have stated that preliminary findings do not suggest foul play, but forensic and safety checks are ongoing.

This tragedy underscores the importance of home fire safety measures, including functional smoke alarms and unobstructed escape routes. Residents are also reminded to keep emergency contact numbers handy and to act quickly if they smell smoke or see signs of fire.

The Bukit Merah incident follows several recent HDB fire cases, reinforcing the urgent need for heightened awareness in both public housing and private property sectors across Singapore.
