The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore is set to launch an innovative trial aimed at enhancing the immigration clearance process for bus travellers at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints. This initiative will allow eligible travellers to use QR codes for a more streamlined and efficient immigration experience.
Starting from November 23, 2024, at the Tuas Checkpoint and November 28, 2024, at the Woodlands Checkpoint, the trial will be available to Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents, Long-Term Pass Holders, and foreign visitors who have previously visited Singapore. This initiative is part of ICA’s ongoing efforts to improve the travel experience and reduce waiting times at land checkpoints.
The trial will be conducted at designated automated lanes and Special Assistance Lanes (SALs) within the arrival and departure bus halls of both checkpoints. Clear signage will be displayed in the bus halls to guide participants to the trial lanes, and ICA officers will be present to assist travellers as needed.
Eligible bus travellers are encouraged to take part in this trial, which aims to help ICA refine its processes for QR code immigration clearance. The process for participating in the trial is straightforward:
- Download the MyICA Mobile Application: Users should first download the app and select the option for “QR Code at Land Checkpoints.”
- Generate a QR Code: Travellers can create either an individual QR code or a group QR code. For those travelling in groups using the SALs, it is essential to select “Bus” as the vehicle type when generating the group QR code.
- Proceed to the Trial Lanes: Participants should head to the designated trial lanes and scan their QR code at the passport scanning area. The ICA system will retrieve the passport details embedded in the QR code, and the first flapper will open upon successful verification.
- Biometric Verification: Finally, travellers will need to present their biometrics, which may include facial recognition and iris or fingerprint scans. Once verified, the second flapper will open, allowing travellers to exit the lane and complete their immigration clearance.
This trial represents a significant step towards modernizing the immigration process at Singapore’s land checkpoints, making it more user-friendly and efficient. By participating, travellers can contribute valuable feedback that will assist ICA in fine-tuning the QR code clearance system for future use.
