The long-standing partnership between Standard Chartered Bank and Singapore’s premier running event has officially come to an end, as Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD steps in as the new title sponsor for 2026. This marks the first major sponsorship shift since 2004, signalling a new chapter for one of Southeast Asia’s most recognised sporting events.
The race will now be known as the BYD Singapore International Marathon presented by Adidas, reflecting a refreshed branding strategy that incorporates multiple high-profile sponsors. While Standard Chartered is no longer the title sponsor, it will continue to play a role as the event’s official bank, maintaining its long association with the marathon.
This sponsorship transition highlights the growing influence of electric vehicle companies in global sports marketing, as brands like BYD expand their footprint beyond automotive innovation into large-scale international events.
New Race Structure and Categories Introduced
Under the revamped sponsorship arrangement, race categories will now carry sponsor branding. Participants can expect to compete in the BYD Marathon, adidas Half Marathon, and Standard Chartered 10km, each reflecting the involvement of different corporate partners.
The event will take place from Dec. 4 to Dec. 6, 2026, with a structured schedule designed to accommodate various running segments. The main marathon is set for the morning of Dec. 6, while the half marathon will be held on Dec. 5. Shorter races, including the 5km and 10km runs, are scheduled for the evening of Dec. 4, alongside children’s running events earlier that same day.
Organisers have also confirmed that the marathon will retain its prestigious World Athletics Gold Label status, reinforcing its position as a leading race in the region. Other race categories will undergo official course measurement and certification by international bodies to ensure compliance with global standards.
Participant Cap Reduced to Improve Race Experience
In response to feedback from previous editions, organisers have announced a cap of 52,000 participants for the 2026 event. This is a reduction from the 55,000 runners who took part in 2025, where congestion issues were reported along key sections of the route and at the finish line.
The move aims to enhance overall race-day experience, ensuring smoother crowd flow and improved safety conditions for participants. With Singapore positioning itself as a premium destination for international sporting events, such adjustments are seen as crucial for maintaining quality and reputation.
The marathon will be organised by SG International Marathon Private Limited, a newly appointed entity selected through an open grant process led by Sport Singapore. Key partners, including the Singapore Tourism Board and the Singapore Athletic Association, will continue to support the event.
Registration for the 2026 marathon is expected to open in April, with strong interest anticipated from both local and international runners eager to be part of this newly rebranded race.
