A Blaze on the Expressway: The Incident Unfolds

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to a fire on the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) towards Tampines Expressway (TPE) just before the Tampines Road exit at 5.50 pm.

A distressing video surfaced on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook group, capturing the intensity of the situation. Flames engulfed the front of a white car, which remained stationary on the chevrons, near the Tampines Road exit.

The Battle Against the Blaze

As the situation escalated, the SCDF firefighters were deployed to the scene. The fire appeared to originate from the car’s engine compartment, unleashing billows of smoke and the fire ravaged the car.

The fire was eventually extinguished by the SCDF using a water jet.

The Aftermath and Investigation

After the flames were subdued, the scene remained one of controlled chaos. A tow truck arrived on the scene, positioned a short distance behind the now-quietened vehicle.

Traffic cones cordoned off the lanes on either side of the car, providing a safe zone for both emergency personnel and passing vehicles.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is currently underway. Understanding the root cause is essential to prevent similar incidents in the future and enhance overall road safety.

Lessons Learned: Preparedness and Vigilance

While the car fire’s outcome was fortunate, it underscores the importance of preparedness and vigilance among motorists and authorities alike.

1. Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Regular maintenance of vehicles is not just about performance; it’s about safety. A well-maintained car is less likely to experience mechanical failures that could lead to fires.

2. Emergency Kits and Training

Having an emergency kit in your vehicle can be a lifesaver. Additionally, knowing how to respond in case of a fire or other emergency can make a critical difference.

3. Immediate Reporting

Quickly reporting any signs of trouble, such as smoke or unusual sounds, to the authorities can lead to timely intervention and prevention of disasters.

4. Fire Safety Awareness

Motorists should be aware of fire safety practices, such as safely pulling over if smoke is detected, turning off the engine, and exiting the vehicle.
