MAN ARRESTED FOR A SERIES OF E-COMMERCE SCAMS

The Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of e-commerce scams involving the sale of “Pokemon” cards.

Between 29 June 2023 and 3 July 2023, the Police received two reports from victims who were purportedly cheated by an online seller, who allegedly advertised a pre-order sale of “Pokemon” cards on Carousell. After receiving a sum of about $37,600 via money transfer, the man did not fulfil the delivery of the “Pokemon” cards.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the 27-year-old man and arrested him on 4 July 2023. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in at least 10 other similar cases involving losses of about $80,000. Watches, shoes and clothes worth about $20,000 bought by the man using the defrauded monies from various victims were seized as case exhibits.

The man will be charged in court on 6 July 2023 with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.

The Police would like to advise members of the public to take the following precautions when engaging online services:

  1. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Only engage service providers from reputable sources.
  2. Whenever possible, avoid making advance payments or direct bank transfers to the service providers.
  3. Scammers may entice buyers to make deposits before the services are provided, and they may also use a local bank account or provide a copy of a NRIC/driver’s licence to make you believe that they are genuine sellers. Do not fall for it!

For more information on scams, members of the public can visit www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Hotline at 1800-722-6688. Anyone with information related to such scams may call the Police hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness.

DBS SERVICES DOWN FOR 6.5 HRS IN MAY, BANK REVEALS THAT IT WAS DUE TO “HUMAN ERROR”

0

On May 5, 2023, customers of DBS Bank faced a major disruption to the bank’s digital banking services that lasted for more than six hours. Preliminary investigations revealed that the disruption was caused by human error in coding the program used for system maintenance.

Human Error

According to Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in his written answer to a parliamentary question, the disruption to DBS’ digital banking services on May 5, 2023, was attributed to human error in coding the program responsible for system maintenance.

This error resulted in a significant reduction in system capacity, leading to difficulties in processing internet and mobile banking, electronic payment, and ATM transactions.

DBS initially described the disruption as a “systems issue” unrelated to a previous disruption in March.

MAS Takes Action: Strengthening Resilience

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) expressed its dissatisfaction with the second disruption within a two-month period. MAS emphasized the importance of delivering reliable services to customers and required retail banks to ensure the resilience of their mission-critical systems supporting digital banking.

In response to the May 5 disruption, MAS imposed an additional capital requirement on DBS, effective from May 6. This requirement aims to ensure that banks can recover quickly from system disruptions and continue serving their customers without significant interruptions.

Following the March disruption, DBS established a special committee to conduct a root cause investigation and review the bank’s IT resilience comprehensively.

However, after the May 5 incident, MAS mandated the committee to extend its review to cover the May disruption as well. Additionally, qualified independent third parties were engaged to assist in the review process.

Once the review is completed, DBS is expected to provide the public with more details regarding the disruptions and the measures taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Recap

DBS bank users across Singapore faced problems accessing the bank’s online banking services on 5 May before the service was resumed hours later, it was the latest service disruption since the outage on 29 March.

Following the latest service disruption, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has increased the penalty on the bank that was imposed for a previous disruption, and ordered for a further review on the latest incident.

In a statement released by the MAS, they described the incident as falling short of their expectations for banks and said that it was unacceptable.

MAS Imposes Further Additional Capital Requirement on DBS Bank for Disruption of Banking Services

Singapore, 5 May 2023…

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has imposed on DBS Bank Ltd (DBS Bank) an additional capital requirement, following the widespread unavailability of DBS Bank’s digital banking services on 29 March 2023 and a subsequent disruption to its digital banking and ATM services on 5 May 2023. Together with the additional capital requirement imposed on DBS in February 2022 , this translates to approximately S$1.6 billion in total additional regulatory capital.

  1. The additional capital requirement on DBS Bank is now a multiplier of 1.8 times to its risk weighted assets for operational risk, an increase from the multiplier of 1.5 times that MAS applied in February 2022 following the November 2021 disruption. MAS may subsequently vary the size of the multiplier depending on the outcome of ongoing reviews.
  2. After the March incident, DBS Bank had convened a Special Board Committee to oversee a full review of the bank’s IT resiliency, to be performed by an independent external expert. MAS had then directed DBS Bank to conduct a comprehensive review, including an assessment of the adequacy of management oversight, staff competencies, operational processes, system resiliency, and architecture design for its digital banking services. Although the causes of the March and May incidents appear distinct from each other, MAS has now required the review to cover the May incident as well.
  3. MAS has also required DBS Bank to take immediate steps to improve the resiliency and recoverability of its existing system, including enhanced monitoring, more comprehensive testing and additional system redundancies, in order to minimise disruption of its services to its customers.
  4. Ms Ho Hern Shin, Deputy Managing Director (Financial Supervision), MAS, said, “DBS Bank has fallen short of MAS’ expectations for banks to deliver reliable services to their customers.  The repeated inconvenience caused to the public is unacceptable.  The additional capital requirement imposed at this time underscores the seriousness with which MAS treats this matter. DBS Bank must spare no effort in dealing with the underlying issues leading to these disruptions.”

FOODPANDA RIDER CAUGHT ON CCTV STEALING PARCEL FROM YISHUN FLAT, FIRED

In a recent incident that has sparked outrage among residents, a foodpanda delivery rider was caught on camera stealing a Shopee parcel from outside an HDB flat in Yishun.

The incident, captured by the apartment’s Google Next doorbell camera, has been circulating on the internet, causing concern and raising questions about the security of online deliveries.

On July 3, at approximately 6:45 pm, a man dressed in a foodpanda uniform was seen approaching a stack of Shopee parcels left outside the flat.

The individual casually browsed through the selection, taking his time to read the labels attached to each package.

Finally, he picked up what appeared to be a lighter package and walked away with it, completely unaware that he was being recorded by the apartment’s security camera.

According to the resident of the flat, the stolen parcel contained two laptop mats with an estimated value of around S$18. Interestingly, the other parcels that were left untouched by the thief included more expensive plastic mats.

The theft was discovered by the owner of the stolen parcel when he noticed that three deliveries had been made to his house, but only two were present.

Realizing that one of his packages was missing, he promptly reported the incident to foodpanda. The resident’s quick action demonstrates the importance of vigilance when it comes to online deliveries and the need to address such incidents promptly.

Upon receiving the report, foodpanda took immediate action to address the situation. The company stated that the rider responsible for the theft has been identified and his rider account has been terminated.

foodpanda maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities and has made it clear that any delivery partner found breaking the law will face severe consequences, including potential suspension or blacklisting.

Although the resident promptly reported the incident, no compensation was offered for the stolen parcel.

CHIKOPEK WHO WAS CHASED BY PUBLIC FOR TAKING UPSKIRT PHOTOS, CAUGHT AGAIN

A repeat offender, previously apprehended for taking upskirt photos in Balestier, has once again found himself in trouble.

The latest incident came to public attention when a video circulated online, revealing two women confronting the accused for secretly photographing and recording them. The women demanded that he immediately delete the compromising material.

Despite initially apologizing, concerns arose later about whether he had actually complied with their request.

The video, filmed from the women’s perspective, gained traction after being shared online by a follower of the @singapore_incidents account on Instagram. The exact date of the incident remains unclear.

The footage captures the intense confrontation between the women and the alleged offender. Initially, one of the women asked the man to delete any photos he had taken. He claimed to have already deleted the photos and offered an apology.

However, another woman suspected that the man had only removed one of the photos and secretly kept the rest.

Text displayed in the video confirmed that the women had caught him taking unauthorized photos and videos of them. Recognizing him as the same person from netizen @kamehao‘s video (where the man was being chased across Balestier after he took upskirt photos), they believed he had not learned his lesson and decided to share their own video as a warning.

Upon reviewing the video, the women realized that the accused may not have deleted the photos and videos that he took

They concluded the video by stating that the alleged perpetrator showed no remorse and advised women to remain vigilant.

Allegedly the same guy

He was also allegedly seen in a video being chased by a passerby along the Balestier area on 11 June for allegedly taking upskirt photos.

Interestingly, the person doing the chasing also recorded the entire sequence of events.

While running in the car park, he mentioned off-camera, “So, this person is suspected of taking upskirt videos.” The pursuit concluded when the suspect was apprehended in the covered car park of Balestier Plaza.

A compilation video of the incident, merging footage from at least two different cameras, was later uploaded on TikTok on June 12.

The video displayed a member of the public dressed in black chasing after a bespectacled individual wearing a face mask and a striped grey t-shirt.

Resolution of the chase: As indicated by the video’s caption, the individual in the grey t-shirt eventually ceased running as he seemed fatigued and low on stamina after a few minutes of pursuit.

He was only wearing one slipper and appeared agitated and tearful by the time the person filming caught up with him.

The individual off-camera, dressed in black, inquired, “Why were you running?” to the chased individual. The person doing the chasing was seen holding the suspect’s phone while questioning him about his actions. The individual in the grey t-shirt offered an apology.

At one point, he mentioned, “I was just taking some shots (with my camera).”

A text-to-voice caption in the video stated that a food delivery personnel present at the scene assisted in alerting the police.

Displaying signs of fear, the suspect was then instructed to sit on the ground after being apprehended by the member of the public.

The suspect expressed, “I really can’t go to jail.”

He was subsequently questioned about whether stress motivated his actions and whether he had captured images of other victims on his phone.

The suspect admitted to having taken images of multiple victims in various locations, citing his lack of a girlfriend and an inability to alleviate stress as reasons for his actions. He acknowledged the wrongdoing of his behavior.

After the suspect remarked, “You know, it’s a guy thing,” the person who captured him retorted, “There’s the internet.”

Before the video concluded, two police officers arrived at the scene.

The police confirmed the incident and said that they were alerted to a voyeurism case along 352 Balestier Road at approximately 6:30 pm.

A 46-year-old man was subsequently arrested for voyeurism. Ongoing investigations are being conducted by the police.

Passersby in Shah Alam stumbled upon a horrifying scene near Taman Sri Orkid—a dead body concealed in the trunk of an abandoned car, according a report by Malay Mail.

This disturbing discovery has led to a police investigation and subsequent arrests of suspects.

On the afternoon of July 4th, unsuspecting individuals made a chilling discovery along a roadside in Shah Alam. Prompted by a call received at approximately 3:25 p.m., the police were alerted to the presence of a dead body.

Passersby had stumbled upon a black Honda City car with a body wrapped in a plastic sheet placed in its trunk. Shockingly, the car had been abandoned at the location for approximately two to three days.

Authorities identified the victim as an Indonesian man. The circumstances surrounding his presence in the abandoned car and the motive behind the crime remain under investigation.

Following the discovery, the police wasted no time in apprehending suspects related to the case. Four individuals, all in their 40s, including one Indonesian woman, were arrested near the scene of the incident at around 7 p.m. on July 4th.

The identities and specific roles of the suspects are part of the ongoing investigation.

Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the case, aiming to establish a clear motive for the crime. Preliminary findings indicate that jealousy may have been a key factor leading to the murder.

The police will delve deeper into the connections between the suspects and the victim to uncover the truth behind this heinous act.

The case falls under Section 302 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which pertains to murder. If found guilty under this section, the offenders could face the death penalty.

DELUSIONAL GUY TALK TO GIRL FOR 2 YEARS THINKING HE HAS A CHANCE

0

Hi guys, is it true that if it were meant to be, it would have happened from the start?

I have been chatting with this girl almost daily for the past two years. We were classmates but and both of us have graduated and we are both working adults. I have a crush on her from the start but i guess she didn’t catch it.

Now we are both working adults, our texting context is usually her ranting to me about her work and some part and bits of her personal life. Did ask her out a few times but it only happen once or twice and was brush away with reasons like her working schedule changed or she got last min plan. Lately we still texts but her reply has been getting slower and slower to like one text a day. Did i missed the chance? Should i be thicked skin and give another shot?

Here are what netizens think:

  • Honestly the thing I learned from 2022 was to be direct, upfront with how I felt. Rejected? Either you steel yourself to try again if you deem she’s worth it, or just find someone else. Why waste the time ‘looking for signs’ and ‘waiting for her to catch it’? That’s all your own ego. I gave up mine, told this girl I really liked her, and shortly after I got her sincere, honest reply about how she felt. Since then, it’s been the happiest of times with her. Figured that I should try to put my ego aside in the face of a girl I really wanted
  • Don’t waste so much time guessing. Just tell her you like her and ask her if she is willing to give you a chance.Either way you get an answer right away and can move on from there.
  • Clearly she’s not interested, or is already involved with someone else. Move on bro, plenty of other fish in the sea.

FIRE THAT BROKE OUT @ TUAS INDUSTRIAL BUILDING RESULTED IN $10M IN LOSSES, MRT DISRUPTED

0

A massive fire broke out at an industrial building in Tuas, Singapore, causing extensive damage to chemical materials and disrupting the surrounding area. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) swiftly responded to the blaze, mobilizing a significant firefighting operation to bring the flames under control.

$10 million worth of chemicals lost

The fire resulted in extensive damage to chemical materials stored within the industrial building. Megachem estimated that approximately $10 million worth of chemicals were lost in the blaze.

The volatile nature of the stored substances posed additional challenges for the firefighters, requiring specialized tactics and equipment to combat the fire effectively.

Fortunately, there were no workers present at the site when the fire broke out. Megachem’s group managing director, Sidney Chew, confirmed that all employees were safe. The SCDF swiftly advised the public to avoid the immediate vicinity of the fire for their safety and to facilitate firefighting operations.

The fire has dealt a severe blow to Megachem, with the estimated loss of $10 million worth of chemicals. Furthermore, the company’s long-standing building, in use since 1994, will require complete reconstruction due to structural damage caused by the fire.

While the loss is significant, Megachem expressed relief that the building was insured, which will assist in the recovery process.

Investigation and Cause of the Fire

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The initial report was made by a security guard on duty, prompting authorities to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Due to the severity of the fire, train services between Tuas Link and Tuas West Road stations on the East-West MRT line were temporarily suspended for nearly two hours.

The disruptions were necessary to ensure the safety of commuters and to facilitate the firefighting efforts. Train services resumed at around 7:20 a.m., allowing normal operations to resume.

GUY QUESTIONS HIMSELF AS HE ALWAYS GETS REJECTED BY GIRLS

0

I feel kind of lost.

I am happy in my life in most aspect except dating.

Everytime I go after a girl in my life, I keep getting rejected.

The most recent made really question myself.

This girl was a 10/10 in my opinion. She was pretty, kind and had a nice personality.

However, within a few interactions, I realised that she had no interest in me. I mean I would ask about her and try to get to know her but she never really asked much about me and she seemed quite uninterested during our conversations.

I still maintained as friends with her. Slowly, we got closer and even she started to make jokes and seemed interested in talking with me. She also opened up to me more with her personal stuff more.

I was going through a rough patch with some family problems when she needed some help. I went out of my way to help her but I requested that she helped me with something else which she agreed to do so.

She never returned the favour and I felt hurt by it. I told her that I felt hurt and she said sorry but never actually returned the favour. Instead, she came back to me asking for more help. She also said that the time spent where explained that I felt hurt was a waste of time and she didnt even bother to try to understand why I felt hurt which made me feel sick.

She was spending time with her other friends going outing and stuff which made me feel really small and unworthy, as if I am a tissue paper.

I attribute the whole experience to a single point of failure. She wasn’t attracted to me. To put it more bluntly, I wasn’t attractive at all.

I really dont want to go through this at all again.

If I like a girl, I want to at least have a fighting chance at it, not be completely ignored like this. At least, she should want to date me to find out if we are compatible.

I want to be attractive.

The problem is I don’t know what I am lacking or how to approach this.

I have things like studies figured out. For example, for Math, I just need to practice questions and for English, I just need to read a lot.

However, I dont know what I need to do for this.

If there is a method to do this, I would like to know. Are there any requirements to be attractive?

I want to be a 10/10 guy, nothing less than that.

Please help me and thank you from the bottom of my heart if you did.
