WARNING! Uber users- please check your bank accounts and remove your credit/debit cards immediately! I logged in today and found SGD 866.86 worth of rides from USA, Canada, HK, AUS and SG deducted from my debit card in the past 24 hours. I have spoken to the bank and they mentioned that there have been several reports recently.
13 April Update: made a police report and the bank says they will investigate which will take 14-21 days. Uber has not responded to my email.
How can I get them to escalate this and refund me? Can someone pls help to tag Uber 😭😔
14 April Update: thank you all who helped/ messaged me with advice on how to handle this. Uber has responded in an email and will be refunding the disputed charges and blocking any more payments from my card (which has also been cancelled). DBS is also on top of this and shared that it will take between 5 to 10 working days to have the money credited back.
A 27-year-old NTU graduate Ms Liu Zhi Hui jumped to her death from her Choa Chu Kang HDB flat after a depression that was caused by her stressful job which forced her over the edge. Her uncle explained that the 27-year-old quit after working for a company that gave was stress and was resting at home for around half a year.
Although her family thought she has depression and encouraged her to visit a doctor, she refused claiming that she felt perfectly healthy. Her uncle lamented that if he knew she had fallen into depression he would have paid more attention to her and such a tragedy could have been stopped.
I am writing to warn the public about security lapses with UOB’s credit card protocols as well as their terrible customer service.
I was overseas in Hanoi, Vietnam some months back and had frequented a restaurant there. Each time I went there, I had spent small amounts, about $50 or thereabouts. I was given some receipts to sign, and I didn’t think much about it. It was on returning to Singapore that I realised that this restaurant been charging me thousands of dollars behind my back! The total bill came up to $5247.57 SGD.
I called UOB’s customer service immediately and was told to go to the Police, as it was a fraud case and the Police are in charge. Note that I am in Singapore and the Singapore Police obviously can’t do anything about this restaurant in Hanoi. I was told there was no need to raise a credit card dispute as it was a police matter. I went down to a branch and filled up the dispute forms anyway, because I wanted to be thorough.
It took UOB 2 months to get back to me. One day I got a mail with scanned copies of a bunch of receipts from the bar in Hanoi, with a generic computer generated letter in front, which stated that these are the receipts UOB obtained, the matter is considered closed. With no explanation whatsoever. Oh, and they informed me I would be charged for obtaining the receipts. I have attached a photo of UOB’s letter for reference. The amount stated in the letter is not even the total amount I disputed. ($3093.03 vs $5247.57)
The interesting thing about these receipts, is that they are all not signed by me. If you just take one look at them, they have no resemblance whatsoever to my sample signature, nor do they even have any resemblance to each other! A few were just a random squiggle across the paper. Again, more quickly-taken photos for proof have been attached.
So I called UOB’s customer service again, and was bounced around repeatedly. People told me they’d refer my case, but didn’t. Or the referred party never replied. It was highly frustrating and extremely unprofessional of UOB. When they finally got back to me, all that was repeatedly told to me was that it was a ‘card present transaction’, and that the bank doesn’t have any chargeback rights, just because I was present at the restaurant. Oh, and one guy even suggested I go to the Vietnamese Tourism Board, which sounded just slightly more ridiculous than your Singapore Police Force idea.
This, to me, is really outrageous. Because what UOB has implied, but not said out loud, is that any establishment, as long as you pass them your card for payment, can technically charge you any amount (within your credit limit, and some of your clients may have very large credit limits, or none at all), as long as you physically passed them your card and a machine read the chip. What’s to stop them from swiping once for the actual purchase, and then another time for an imaginary bonus they give themselves at our cost?
I think people deserve to know that this is actually possible, before UOB sells them any more credit cards. Also, their customer service is horrible and uncoordinated. There is a certain Ms Punitha, a manager from the customer service department who was especially unhelpful and not very useful for anything other than generic, rehearsed, meaningless replies. I asked specifically for someone from the credit card disputes department to email me in black and white to explain the situation. This has not happened after weeks. In fact, there is no way of contacting that department. They have a habit of sending anonymous letters customers’ homes I believe. I have been with UOB for years but the bank has managed over the last few months to completely erode any trust I had in them.
I will not pay for transactions I did not make, and I don’t think anybody should have to. I await UOB’s reply, in public. In the meantime, I will also pursue this matter with CASE and the small claims tribunal. I gave UOB ample chances to make this right. It’s unfortunate it has to get this ugly.

I just heard Jamie Yeo of Gold 905 saying something very disturbing about the doctor who was forcibly removed on United Airlines. She said that unlike government ministers who have sued for defamation when their reputations are attacked, Dr David Dao should just accept the apology and move on.
Why is she even comparing the government with this case? In her eagerness to ingratiate herself with the government she has forgotten that Dr Dao was physically hurt and humiliated in front of many people. His reputation has also been ruined by people who have dug up information about his past convictions and posted it on social media. United Airlines initial “apology” was not even sincere and Dr Dao was even labelled as being “belligerent”.
Why should he accept United’s apology and move on? If Jamie Yeo or her family and friends were abused and embarrassed in this manner would she not take legal action.
I was even more disgusted when she went on to mention that Dr David Dao had a “shady past”. His past has nothing to do with this matter at all and the airlines staff did not even know about his previous transgressions when he was booted off the plane forcibly. Jamie Yeo, who has been divorced twice has a “shady past” too. Wasn’t she the 3rd party that broke up Glenn Ong’s marriage and her 2nd husband is a fugitive wanted by the police for drug offences?

Netizen Audrey shared on facebook an illegally parked car under the HDB which was pasted full of colourful post-it stickers for parking at the no waiting area. The incident happened at block 651A and is most likely a prank on the car owner. The actual location of this car is unknown.
So much effort into pranking their friend, good job lah! Who says Singaporeans don’t know how to have fun? The netizen later shared that she saw a bunch of uni kids laughing while getting into the car. Most likely a prank, not vandalism lah.
On 13/4/17 in an official release in an attempted to bribe three police officers a woman has been arrested by the Singapore Police Force.
As an enticement to let her go when they directed anti-vice operations along Stamford Road at about 3pm on Tuesday the suspect recurrently presented the officers “a sum of money”. Even with the warning that bribery is a serious the suspect did not take heed.
Rejecting the bribes were officers, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chan Wai Hoong, Station Inspector (SI) Ng Bak Guan and Corporal Ruby Yau from Central Division and had her arrested for trying to bribe a police officer.
The suspect is also being investigated for her suspected involvement in vice activities with the case been referred to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau for investigations.

With the“spiritual-journey-through-the-world” appeal that most begpackers would, Hoist would rather take the money he gets from the locals on alcohol and prostitutes.
On 24/2/2017 when he arrived in Singapore he wasted no time to search for beer and girls in Geylang as he claims.
