Woman Reports Sexual Harassment on MRT by Repeat Offender
A woman has come forward to report an incident of sexual harassment on the MRT, claiming she encountered a repeat offender who took advantage of the crowded conditions to touch female passengers inappropriately.
Incident Details
The unnamed female passenger recounted her experience to Xin Ming Daily, stating that on the evening of May 13, around 6:35 PM, she was on the North-South Line at the Jurong East MRT station when she noticed a man behaving suspiciously. She recognised him as someone she had encountered six months prior in a similar situation.
The woman described the man as being in his 30s, approximately 170 cm tall, with a slim build, wearing a short-sleeved shirt and sports pants. She reported that he moved closer to her shortly after she boarded the train and then proceeded to lean towards another female passenger, making contact with her backside.
Taking Action
The woman documented the incident by taking photos and videos, and she warned the other female passenger to move away. After the man exited the train at Bukit Batok station, she showed the video to the other woman, who thanked her for the warning. The passenger expressed that she did not confront the man directly due to concerns for her safety.
The following day, she spotted the same man again at the Jurong East MRT station. She observed that he seemed to be “looking for targets” while waiting for the train. If he did not find a suitable target, he would return to the platform to wait for the next train.
Reporting to Authorities
The woman later reported the incident to the police and informed MRT staff about the situation. While she did not disclose her report number, she hopes to raise awareness among female passengers to remain vigilant while using public transport.
She recalled that she had seen the same man six months ago, closely following another female passenger, which made her suspect that they were in a relationship. However, she later realized they were not a couple when the man exited the train first.
Conclusion
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of sexual harassment in public transport systems and the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings. Authorities encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses such behaviour to report it immediately to ensure the safety of all passengers.
