The Singapore Food Agency previously said in an announcement that 9 manufacturers were suspended for improper use of food additives.

One of the affected manufacturers, Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh, then disputed the SFA’s findings and conducted their own lab test, before sending the findings to SFA.

SFA then got back to the manufacturer and they then had their suspension lifted.

Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh’s first statement

Dear Customers,

We are aware that the news release by Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on local kueh manufacturers using prohibited preservatives has alarmed and affected you, our loyal customers. Our sincere apologies for this.

We will like to clarify and state categorically that the products manufactured by Jian Bo Shui Kueh, namely the mentioned “Chwee Kueh, 9 Layer Kueh, Tapioca Kueh” do not contain the said preservatives. Upon receiving the notification from SFA, we have sent our products for laboratory tests on 26 July 2022. We received the results today, 27 July 2022 and it is negative.

We have submitted the laboratory test reports to SFA and are currently seeking clarifications from them on this action against us. It has negatively impacted our business, affected our reputation and brand name and most importantly, shaken our customers’ confidence in our products.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our customers who are standing by us during this period. We will post an update of the situation in the next few days.

Thank you.

We are happy to share that the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) gave us a formal reply this morning after reviewing the laboratory test reports. They have revoked their earlier direction to impose movement controls, recall and manage food under the Sale of Food Act (Cap. 283) on our products, namely “Chwee Kueh”, “9 Layer Kueh”, and “Tapioca Kueh”.

Jian Bo is a heritage brand with close to 65 years of history and strong track record over the years. We pride ourselves in maintaining stringent food safety standards stipulated in the Act and the Food Regulations before distribution and sale.

We look forward to seeing you at our outlets soon.

Thank you.
