Following the news of Coco Lee’s death on 5 July, people from all walks of life have come forward to honor the cherished Hong Kong singer. Her music resonated with millions, but it was her compassion and benevolence that truly set her apart.
Among the numerous heartfelt messages, a poignant incident from 2016 has resurfaced, highlighting the loss of not only an iconic talent but also a genuinely caring individual.
In 2016, Lee was filming for a singing competition when she encountered Zhang Wang Han, an elderly street vendor selling oranges on the chilly streets of Changsha, China during the winter.
Coco Lee, along with the support of her mother and sister, decided to purchase 100kg of oranges from the elderly street vendor. Despite her busy schedule, Coco Lee recognized the importance of helping someone in need.
In a recent interview, the 83-year-old Zhang Wang Han emotionally recounted Coco Lee’s kindness from all those years ago.
The incident unfolded while Coco Lee was filming the fourth season of ‘I am a Singer’ in Changsha. Although she couldn’t personally buy the oranges, Coco Lee entrusted her mother and sister with the task of acquiring 100kg of oranges from the elderly vendor.
According to Yahoo! News Taiwan, Zhang Wang Han had to sell approximately 18,000kg of oranges to gather enough funds for his return home during Chinese New Year.
Coco Lee’s contribution extended beyond the purchase of oranges; she generously provided the elderly man with 2,000 yuan (equivalent to S$374) and essential supplements, along with warm clothing. Her care and concern went far beyond a simple act of charity.
Coco Lee took the initiative to distribute the purchased oranges to artists, staff, and audience members at the singing show, spreading joy and goodwill to all.
Her selfless gesture not only impacted Zhang Wang Han’s life but also left a lasting impression on those around her. It epitomized the true essence of humanity.
Upon hearing the news of Coco Lee’s untimely passing, the now 83-year-old Zhang Wang Han couldn’t help but shed tears.
Alongside the 100kg of oranges, Coco Lee dedicated significant efforts to package and distribute over 120,000kg of oranges in Zhang’s village. Her act of kindness became a symbol of hope for the entire community.
While Zhang regrets not having Coco Lee’s contact information, he remains grateful for her kind and selfless gesture, stating, “I still remember her kindness. I am very thankful for her.”
