In a heart-wrenching incident that occurred at the Sun Sails Build-To-Order (BTO) project construction site in Sembawang, a 29-year-old Bangladeshi construction worker tragically lost his life after falling from height, according to The Straits Times.
The Tragic Accident
The incident took place on Monday (9 October) when the construction worker was on the 10th storey of a building under construction at Block 371B Sembawang Avenue.
He was guiding a crane operator in lifting a material waste bucket when tragedy struck. The bucket swung uncontrollably, striking the worker and causing both him and the fall protection barriers to plummet ten storeys to the ground.
Police response
Upon being alerted to the accident around 3 pm, the police swiftly arrived at the scene. The injured worker was immediately rushed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital while unconscious, but his injuries proved fatal, and he tragically succumbed to them and died.
Preliminary investigations by the police have not raised suspicions of foul play in this tragic accident. However, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has taken swift action by instructing BHCC Construction, the occupier of the worksite, to halt all lifting works immediately.
Alarming Workplace Fatality Statistics
The sad demise of this construction worker adds to a growing list of workplace fatalities in Singapore. Since the beginning of 2023, at least 20 workplace deaths have been reported.
In light of these troubling statistics, MOM has issued safety guidelines for lifting crews like riggers and signalmen.
They are required to maintain a line of sight to the load being lifted and ensure their positions are free from danger. Additionally, workers at heights should wear full-body harnesses and ensure they are well-anchored.
Housing Board’s Commitment
The Housing Board (HDB) has also stepped forward, promising to work closely with the Sun Sails building contractor to support and assist the family of the deceased worker.
Safety remains a top priority for HDB, and they conduct regular safety audit inspections for all their ongoing projects, with a special focus on high-risk areas, such as worker safety at heights.
8. Sun Sails Housing Project
The Sun Sails BTO project is expected to be completed in 2025 and is made up of 8 residential blocks measuring 6 to 13 storeys tall, with a total of 726 assorted flat sizes.
