Controversial Podcast Claims K-Pop Star IU Involved in Prostitution for USD$500,000

Singapore, 29 May 2025 – K-pop fans were left reeling on May 28 when serious allegations emerged against two of South Korea’s most prominent female artists, Blackpink’s Jennie and soloist IU. The claims were made during an episode of the US-based podcast “Above The Influence,” hosted by Michelle Kira Lee, an entrepreneur and influencer known for her past relationship with former BIGBANG member T.O.P.

Allegations of Dark Practices in K-Pop

During the podcast, Kira made shocking assertions about the K-pop industry, alleging that female idols and top-tier celebrities engage in prostitution with wealthy businessmen. She claimed that affluent individuals could approach entertainment companies to request spending a night with idols, stating, “Apparently, with every K-Pop, Korean celebrity, actress, there’s a price tag on their head.” Kira specifically mentioned IU, claiming that the cost for a night with her could reach up to USD 500,000 (approximately SGD 675,000). However, Kira did not provide any evidence linking IU directly to these claims, stating that she used the singer merely as an example.

Support for the Claims and Backlash

The podcast host, Wootak, supported Kira’s allegations by sharing his own purported experiences, claiming that he knew someone who paid for sexual encounters with Jennie. He mentioned that his friend had shown him a video as “proof” of the encounter. The podcast episode, which was initially released two months prior, was later edited and made available as bonus content for paid subscribers, leading to widespread controversy on social media.

In light of these allegations, fans of both Jennie and IU expressed their outrage online, demanding that the idols take legal action against Kira and Wootak for their unverified claims.

Response from the Podcast Hosts

Wootak defended the podcast’s content in an Instagram story, clarifying that the allegations were presented as hearsay rather than personal assertions. He stated, “I am not hating or attacking Jennie, simply telling a story I HEARD.” He acknowledged the dark aspects of the K-pop industry and apologized, expressing his intention to continue supporting Jennie’s music.

The podcast’s official Instagram account later issued a statement explaining that the controversial discussion was intended for a limited audience and not for widespread distribution. Co-host Esther also responded to the backlash in a now-deleted Instagram story, dismissing concerns from K-pop fans.

Historical Context of Allegations in K-Pop

The topic of K-pop idols having “sponsors” or wealthy individuals who exchange financial support for sexual favors is not new. In 2016, female idol G.NA faced accusations of engaging in sexual activities with a businessman for USD 30,000 (approximately SGD 40,500) and was subsequently charged with prostitution.

As of now, neither Jennie nor IU has publicly responded to the allegations made in the podcast. The situation continues to unfold, with fans and the public closely monitoring any developments.
