I’ve been holding this in for three days, and the guilt is starting to feel like a physical weight in my chest. My wife and I decided to do a “spa day” at a local spot we’d never been to before. We’ve been married for six years, and things are good—mostly—but life has been a bit of a grind lately. I thought a couples’ massage would be the perfect way to reconnect.
The atmosphere was dim, and the practitioners were professional, but my masseuse was undeniably striking. She had this quiet, intense energy that I picked up on immediately. During the session, while my wife was face-down on the table next to me, I felt a tension that had nothing to do with muscle knots. There were lingering touches, a certain way she leaned in—maybe it was all in my head, or maybe she knew exactly what she was doing.
When the hour was up, we walked out to the lobby. My wife was glowing, totally relaxed. She realized she’d forgotten she had a quick Zoom call for a volunteer committee she helps lead, so I told her to take the car and head home; I’d walk the ten blocks back to “clear my head” and get some steps in. As soon as her taillights disappeared around the corner, my stomach did a flip.
I walked back inside.
I told the receptionist I’d left my fitness tracker in the room. When I got back to the hallway, the masseuse was there. No words were really needed. I paid for a second, private session in a back room—the “special” treatment that isn’t on the official menu.
I spent $250 on a “round two” that lasted forty minutes. Walking home afterward, the “head clearing” I promised my wife felt more like a mental fog. I sat down for dinner an hour later, and she was telling me how much she appreciated the day and how much she loved me. I just nodded and ate my pasta, feeling like the biggest hypocrite on the planet. I cheated on my wife while she was still feeling the relaxation of a gift I gave her. I don’t know if I can ever tell her, but I also don’t know how to look her in the eye anymore.
