Covid-19 Cases In Singapore Surge 58% In A Week, Authorities Monitoring New Wave

Singapore has recorded a sharp rise in Covid-19 infections, with weekly cases jumping by more than 58% as health authorities monitor a fresh wave driven largely by a new variant.

According to the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA), an estimated 12,700 Covid-19 cases were reported between 10 and 16 May. This marks a significant increase from the 8,000 cases recorded the week before.

The latest figures also showed a rise in hospital admissions linked to the virus, although authorities stressed that there is currently no evidence suggesting the dominant circulating strain causes more severe illness.

Hospitalisations Increase Alongside Covid-19 Cases

The average number of daily Covid-19 hospitalisations rose from 56 to 73 over the same period, according to CDA data.

On average, one Covid-19 patient per day required admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

While the numbers remain far lower than those seen during the peak pandemic years, the increase has sparked renewed attention towards public health precautions and vaccination uptake, especially among vulnerable groups.

Health experts noted that such waves are now expected periodically as Covid-19 has transitioned into an endemic respiratory illness similar to influenza.

NB.1.8.1 Variant Now Main Strain In Singapore

CDA said more than half of locally sequenced Covid-19 cases were linked to the NB.1.8.1 variant, which is a descendant of the JN.1 strain.

However, authorities emphasised there is currently “no indication” that the variant spreads faster or leads to more severe disease compared to previously circulating strains.

The rise in infections is believed to be partly driven by waning immunity within the population, especially among individuals whose last vaccination or infection occurred many months ago.

Singapore’s current Covid-19 vaccines are still considered effective against the NB.1.8.1 variant, CDA added.

Seniors And Vulnerable Individuals Urged To Get Vaccinated

The agency advised seniors aged 60 and above, medically vulnerable individuals, and healthcare workers to ensure they are up to date with their Covid-19 vaccinations.

People living with or caring for vulnerable individuals were also encouraged to receive booster jabs as an added layer of protection.

Covid-19 vaccinations remain available at participating clinics and polyclinics across Singapore for individuals aged six months and above.

Authorities also reminded the public to continue practising responsible hygiene habits, including frequent hand washing and covering coughs or sneezes properly.

Those feeling unwell were advised to minimise social interactions and unnecessary travel. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, sore throat, runny nose, or headaches were encouraged to wear masks to reduce transmission risks.

The latest increase comes amid growing regional concerns over periodic Covid-19 spikes across parts of Asia, though Singapore authorities have not indicated any plans to reintroduce broad restrictions at this stage.
