A passenger on board an American Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Washington DC reportedly tried to break into the cockpit of the plane during a flight, as well as attempting to open an exit door.
He was subsequently subdued by the crew members and other passengers on board, and the plane then made a rapid emergency landing in Kansas City.
The incident happened on 13 February.
American Airlines said in a statement that their Flight 1775 had landed safely in Kansas City and was met by law enforcement officials.
The airline said that their crew members had handled the circumstances with the utmost skill and professionalism, but stopped short of responding to questions about the passenger’s dangerous actions.
According to New York Times, a passenger who was on board the flight at the time, Mr Mouaz Moustafa, said that the man had tried to enter the cockpit, as well and trying to exit the plane via the main door before being held down by the other passengers.
He said that one of the flight attendants then ran to the back of the plane to retrieve a coffee pot and used it to bash the guy on the head, and he started bleeding profusely.
Passengers waited on the plane following the emergency landing as FBI officials conducted interviews with the witnesses.
The man has since been taken into custody, according to FBI special agent Charles Dayoub.
