Crocodile ‘Sighting’ At Pandan Reservoir Found To Be Fake, Police Report Lodged

A reported crocodile sighting at Pandan Reservoir that prompted authorities to suspend water activities has been found to be false, according to the Public Utilities Board (PUB).

PUB said the information provided about the alleged sighting was not genuine. Following the development, search operations for the supposed crocodile have been called off, while a police report has been lodged over the false information.

The incident had earlier raised concerns among people using the reservoir for recreational and sporting activities. Authorities had taken precautionary measures while efforts were made to determine whether a crocodile was actually present in the area.

Water Activities Were Suspended As A Precaution

In an earlier joint update, PUB and the National Parks Board (NParks) said the Singapore Rowing Association and Singapore Canoe Federation had been informed to suspend activities at Pandan Reservoir.

The temporary suspension affected water-based activities at the reservoir while authorities investigated the reported sighting. Such measures are intended to minimise potential risks to members of the public while wildlife-related reports are assessed.

Search operations were subsequently carried out in an effort to establish whether there was any crocodile in the reservoir. However, authorities were unable to substantiate the report.

Authorities Call Off Search Operations

PUB later confirmed that the information provided about the alleged crocodile sighting was false. With the report determined to be fake, search operations have now ceased.

The authorities have also made a police report in relation to the false information. It remains unclear what motivated the person or persons behind the report or whether any further action will be taken following the police investigation.

The episode highlights the potential consequences of making false reports involving public safety. Even an unverified wildlife claim can result in authorities deploying resources, suspending recreational activities and taking precautionary measures to protect members of the public.

False Wildlife Reports Can Have Wider Consequences

Pandan Reservoir is used for various recreational activities, including rowing and canoeing, making reports of potentially dangerous wildlife particularly significant. A genuine crocodile sighting could require immediate safety measures and restrictions while authorities assess the situation.

However, false information can create unnecessary disruption and divert manpower and resources away from genuine public safety concerns. The incident also serves as a reminder that members of the public should avoid spreading unverified claims, particularly when they involve potential threats to safety.

For now, the reported crocodile does not appear to have been present at Pandan Reservoir based on the authorities’ findings. Water activities that had been suspended because of the report can therefore be assessed for resumption following the latest update from the relevant authorities.

The police report lodged by PUB is expected to allow authorities to investigate how the false information was provided and determine whether any offences may have been committed.
