A Singapore-based cross-border worker was held at knifepoint and robbed at a bus stop in Johor Bahru after completing his shift, losing both his belongings and significant funds in a swift theft.
According to local reports, the incident occurred around 7:30am on 8 January at a bus stop along Tebrau Road, near the Lotus’s hypermarket. The victim, identified only as Chen, is a 28-year-old warehouse administrator who regularly commutes between Singapore and Johor Bahru via public bus.
Chen’s routine commute often requires him to alight late at night, leaving him vulnerable. On the morning of the incident, he was confronted by three well-built men. One of the assailants brandished a knife, forcing Chen aside and swiftly taking his wallet, mobile phone, and other personal items.
Wallet Contained Vital Documents
Chen’s wife later shared the ordeal online, describing it as a terrifying experience. She revealed that the stolen wallet contained essential documents, including Chen’s driving licence, work permit, and the identity cards of their two children. The robbers fled the scene before Chen could react, and he returned home unharmed but shaken.
In a further blow, the perpetrators quickly exploited Chen’s ATM card. Within just 30 minutes, over RM3,000 (approximately S$950) was transferred from his bank account to an overseas account, compounding the financial loss from the robbery.
Police Confirm Investigation Underway
Johor Bahru police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, urging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward. The case highlights the risks faced by cross-border commuters, particularly during early morning or late-night hours, and the need for vigilance when handling personal documents and banking information.
Authorities have also reminded the public to take precautionary measures, such as avoiding isolated areas and being alert when travelling alone, to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
With the investigation still active, Chen’s family hopes the authorities will quickly apprehend the suspects and recover both the stolen items and the transferred funds.
