DAUGHTER TOLD HER PARENTS TO PAY RENT IF THEY WANT TO STAY OVER AT HER HOME

I (28F) have never had a good relationship with my parents. I was the child who was left out of everything.

I moved to the US many years ago as I do not want anything to do with my parents nor do I want to stay in Singapore.

Three days ago, my parents came into town unannounced and turned up at my house. I haven’t spoken/ had a real conversation with them in I don’t even know how long, only the occasional birthday wishes and other stuff.

At the age of 14, I was forced to get a job and help pitch in with groceries while my older sibling didn’t have to.

I also had to save up for poly and uni (which I was fine doing since it’s their money and they can do whatever they want with it). I also had to buy pads and tampons for myself at the age of 14. (My mother still bought them for my older sister).

At the age of 18, they made me start paying rent ($400/ month) which I did for the first year until I moved out and into a dorm. Over the next few years, I cut contact with my family and focused on myself. About 4 ish years ago I moved away to Los Angeles from my family and my best friend asked me if I wanted to be her partner in opening up a pub to which I agreed (her father was our sponsor).

My parents found out and because of religious beliefs told me they could never support me. I didn’t care and fast forward to now we have a successful pub which makes us financially stable/ comfortable.

Now three days ago my parents turned up announced to my house and asked to stay for two weeks. (My home has enough rooms for guests unlike my brother who moved about an hour away from me about two years ago ).

I asked them for $200 in rent upfront to which they flipped and stormed off. Later that day I received a ton of msgs from my siblings and family members about what I had done, basically saying I was selfish and that I was being an Ahole.

So was I in the wrong for asking my parents for rent?
