On May 11, Education Minister Lawrence Wong in Parliament said that BTO flat construction projects might be delayed by a year or more due to the tightening of border measures.

Some of the border measures include all travellers from high-risk places receiving longer stay home notices, and a ban on travellers to Singapore with recent travel history from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The Minister also said that many people called for stricter regulations to prevent infections from other countries to enter Singapore, but doing so might seriously impact Singapore and Singaporeans.

Contractors will be hit “especially hard” in particular, and delays of varying degrees might affect private home buyers said Minister Wong.

“Likewise companies in the marine and process sectors will be badly affected. They will find it hard to deliver their existing projects on time, and a few may even have to forgo new opportunities and projects.

“These are important sectors that we have taken decades to build – they hire thousands of Singaporean engineers and executives, and remain crucial sources of highly-skilled jobs,” said Education Minister.
