Dentist in Vietnam Arrested After Attacking Patient With Barbell Over Braces Dispute

A Vietnamese dentist has been arrested in Ho Chi Minh City after brutally attacking her patient who had complained about pain from braces treatment. The shocking incident, which was caught on video and widely shared online, has led to the immediate closure of her clinic by health authorities.

Patient’s Complaint Turned Violent

The victim, identified as 31-year-old Tien Thao, reportedly paid 22 million Vietnamese Dong (about S$1,078) for braces at the Tuyet Chinh Dental Clinic in 2021. When her braces were removed in August 2025, she experienced severe pain and was later diagnosed with bone damage at another medical facility. Seeking answers, she returned to confront the clinic’s owner, 40-year-old dentist Nguyễn Thị Tuyết Chinh.

Instead of addressing the complaint, Chinh allegedly lashed out in anger. A video recorded by the patient’s friend showed Chinh grabbing a metal rod and striking the patient before dragging her to the ground. The footage further revealed Chinh choking and hurling insults at the victim, as well as smashing her glasses and throwing her phone. Both items, valued at about S$980, were destroyed in the scuffle.

Clinic Shut Down Over Violations

Following the attack, Chinh was arrested on charges of “causing public disorder”. Investigators who later inspected the Tuyet Chinh Dental Clinic discovered multiple irregularities, including offering services beyond its approved licence, misleading advertisements, and poor record-keeping. Alarmingly, three employees were unable to show valid medical licences when questioned.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has since ordered the clinic’s closure, condemning Chinh’s actions and promising a thorough investigation. Officials also visited the victim, who is currently receiving treatment for neck injuries sustained during the assault.

Wider Concerns Over Dental Safety

The case has sparked outrage in Vietnam, raising questions about the safety and regulation of smaller dental practices. With cosmetic dentistry growing in popularity across Asia, experts stress that patients should carefully verify the credentials of clinics before undergoing treatment.

For Singapore readers, the case is a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring that medical and dental services here are strictly licensed and regularly audited — a safeguard that protects patients from malpractice and negligence.
