The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) responded to media queries, saying that investigations into the arrest of Dickson Yeo, who pleaded guilty in the United States to working for Chinese intelligence, hasn’t revealed any direct threat to Singapore’s Security.
MHA revealed that the US authorities informed them of Yeo’s arrest in November 2019.
Meanwhile, the National University of Singapore (NUS) has already stated that they have terminated Yeo’s PhD candicature, effective immediately.
The US Justice Department said that 39-year-old Dickson Yeo pleaded guilty earlier last week on July 24 in a Washington federal court, to one charge of operating illegally as a foreign agent.
The MHA said that Singaporeans are expected to abide by the laws of the country which they visit or reside in.
They also added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is rendering consular assistance to Yeo, as required.
Yeo will be sentenced October 9, and he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.
