On September 2, 2021, the owner of Bedok Day & Night Clinic and Jurong Day & Night Clinic, who is also a practicing doctor at the clinics, was charged with cheating and falsification of accounts under the Penal Code, Chapter 224.
The doctor, who was 50 years old at the time, allegedly defrauded the Polyclinics by submitting fraudulent CHAS claims for medical treatments he did not execute and inflating CHAS claims for operations he did perform.
In order to substantiate these fraudulent claims, he is also accused of fabricating patients’ medical case notes. The alleged offenses occurred between 2015 and 2016, affecting 215 patients and totaling more than $62,000 in claims.
If found guilty, the doctor might face the following penalties:
- For each charge of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years and a possible fine; and
- For each charge involving the falsification of accounts under Section 477A of the Penal Code, imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, or with fine, or with both.
