A 47-year-old man lost his life after the vehicle he was driving crashed and overturned along a road in Johor during the early hours of the morning.
The fatal incident took place at around 2.45am on Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang, near KM5.1 of Jalan Tun Habab in Kota Tinggi. Authorities said the vehicle ended up overturned on its roof following the crash.
A 46-year-old woman, who was travelling in the front passenger seat at the time, survived the accident and was later taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Police Believe Driver Suffered Medical Episode
According to Kota Tinggi district police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman, preliminary investigations indicate that the driver may have suffered a heart attack while behind the wheel.
The suspected medical emergency is believed to have caused him to lose control of the vehicle, resulting in the crash and subsequent overturning of the car.
Emergency responders who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead on the spot. The female passenger sustained injuries and was transported to Kota Tinggi Hospital for further treatment and observation.
Body Sent for Post-Mortem Examination
Police confirmed that the deceased’s body has been sent to the Forensic Unit at Kota Tinggi Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators are continuing to gather information surrounding the incident, including whether any other factors may have contributed to the crash.
Road accidents triggered by sudden medical emergencies remain a concern, as drivers can lose consciousness or become incapacitated without warning, posing significant risks to themselves, passengers and other road users.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have opened an investigation into the case under Section 41(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987, which relates to causing death by reckless or careless driving.
While early findings point towards a possible heart attack, police will await the results of the post-mortem examination and other investigative findings before reaching a final conclusion.
Members of the public are reminded to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with heart-related conditions, especially before undertaking long journeys or driving, as sudden medical episodes can have devastating consequences on the road.
