The driver posted a video on the Chinese social media platform Weibo showing the extreme measures he had to go through to unlock an in-car application.

He knelt down on the ground in order to access the facial recognition function because the camera was located below the vehicle’s license plate because at the beginning of the clip when he walked into the frame, only his legs were captured by the camera.

Netizens online commented that it looked like the man was trying to kowtow and worship his car in order to access the in-car app.

The XPeng Motors’ user development and service centre later issued a statement and they are aware of the circulating video.

They commenced an investigation into the incident and found out that the users had to undergo facial recognition when logging into an application that was made by a third party.

They removed the third-party application and are now trying to optimise the car’s system to rectify the “poor user experience”.

XPeng Motors also issued an apology for their “carelessness”.
