Accidents are unexpected and chaotic events that can happen to anyone at any time. They often leave us feeling bewildered, scared, and unsure about how to react.
In a recent incident along Yishun Street 81, a driver faced a moral dilemma after colliding with a cyclist. The cyclist lay motionless on the road, prompting the driver to make a crucial decision: Should he move the victim away from traffic or leave them be?
He ultimately chose to drag the unconscious cyclist that he had run over, onto the side of the road instead.
The Accident: A Terrifying Encounter
On a fateful evening, a cyclist was making his way along Yishun Street 81, but his actions took an unexpected turn. Going against the flow of traffic, he crossed a lane divider, and as fate would have it, a sedan emerged from a carpark, colliding with the cyclist.
The impact sent both the cyclist and his bicycle tumbling to the ground, and the driver didn’t stop immediately. To make matters worse, it appeared that the car ran over the cyclist’s foot.
As the cyclist lay motionless on the road, the driver faced a dilemma. In a video shared by SG Road Vigilante, we see the driver getting out of his car and walking over to the cyclist.
He then did something that has sparked a debate among netizens: he grabbed the unconscious man and dragged him to the side of the road.
The Public’s Response
Netizens were quick to react to this incident. Many expressed concern, believing that the driver might have made a mistake by moving the cyclist.
A Facebook user commented, “Should not touch or drag the casualty when such an accident happens,” emphasizing the importance of not interfering with an accident victim.
The Cyclist’s Share of Blame
The public’s opinion was divided not only on the driver’s actions but also on whether the cyclist bore some responsibility for the accident.
One netizen pointed out that the cyclist was riding against traffic direction, which is prohibited by the Road Traffic Act. According to this act, a person must not ride a bicycle on a road against the flow of traffic.
However, another netizen offered a different perspective. They argued, “The cyclist wasn’t driving against traffic; he was turning right into the road where the driver was exiting. Seeing the car driving towards him, he had to turn away, which made him travel straight, against the traffic.”
Official Statements
In response to the incident, the police said that they were alerted to the accident and reported that a 69-year-old male cyclist was conveyed to the hospital, conscious but injured.
The 50-year-old male driver is cooperating with the ongoing police investigations. The Singapore Civil Defence Force also conveyed a person to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
