
A woman was sentenced to jail and fined for assaulting a Grab driver, after drinking champagne during a New Year’s party.
The incident happened on 31 December 2017. Ms Cheryl Hew attended New Year’s eve party at her friend’s house at 7 pm. They started drinking champagne and becoming inebriated.
After the party at about 3.30am the next day, Ms Cheryl’s friend decided to book a Grab car to send her home. During the journey, she says the driver was taking an incorrect route and started to shout at him. When the situation became aggressive, the driver decided to drive into the nearest petrol kiosk to ask for assistance
When the driver reached the petrol kiosk and alighted to seek for assistance, Ms Cheryl also alighted and followed behind him. She started to attack him by hitting his back and arm. The whole incident was captured in a CCTV nearby.
During the hearing, Ms Cheryl also added that the driver ignored her requested route and wanted to alight somewhere near her place, so she can walk home but the driver insisted and drove her to the petrol kiosk.
Ms Cheryl pleaded guilty on 3 November 2020 and was sentenced to 10 days jail followed by S$1,000 fine, for using and causing hurt to a public transport worker.
